Shipei Wang is a painter and screen printer based in Glasgow. Drawing on her multinational background, her style confronts and fuses East Asian and Western motifs. This fusion results in a unique visual language that navigates and narrates tales of lost and rediscovered identities, lust and love, betrayal and revenge. According to Shipei, her approach to painting is “a direct translation from literary story-telling to visual narrative”

Originally painted onto Haboti silk, Next To You (2020) skilfully presents an experience of the everyday day shared between two people. Inseparably linked with the dreamlike rendering and ambiguous placement of human forms, the piece’s subtle narrative draws its meaning from the banality of routine in everyday life. In this instance, an unspoken moment between a couple that mediates an intimacy and desire they have with one another in their domestic setting.

Shipei has exhibited internationally and is also the recipient of a number of notable awards - the Royal Scottish Academy Stevenston's Award (for a Painter of Merit, 2018), Glasgow Print Studio Award (2019), and the RSA Benno Schotz Award (for the most promising work by a Scotland-based artist under 35), among others.
