In her practice, Joanna explores uncanny environments based on memories, dreams and collected photographs. Within her partially figurative scenes, details pointing to a specific time or place are subtracted, leaving an image that seeks to appeal to a collective lens.

“The two paintings in this first release are based on photographs I take, sometimes intentionally for my work and other times simply to record them. I like to think of what drew me to them and create the impression that something exists beyond them, hidden behind a reflection or shadow. This thing is sensed by the viewer but never revealed, even to myself. I first redraw what I see in the photograph, subtracting details and reframing the subject (i.e. the signpost). I then think of a suitable time for the scene and pick a palette depending on it.” – Joanna
