Liminal Feeling
Liminal Feeling
Art Year: 2022
Ian Miller’s exploration of the intersection between graphic design, illustration and fine art perfectly defines TCP’s aesthetic. Miller was born in Twin Cities, Minnesota, and currently lives in Santa Barbara, California. His influences encompass an array of areas that include advertising, illustration, early computer graphics, interior spaces and “background” objects. At College, he was taught by American painter Ann Toebbe who ignited his love for oil. Since graduating in 2015, Miller has gone on to develop his distinct aesthetic where he uses both contemporary technologies and classical painting techniques. His smooth canvases, void of tactile surfaces, give the illusion of almost being digital photographs.
Liminal Feeling is an example of Miller’s ability to traverse the graphic illustration and fine art worlds. A harmonious composition is achieved through his use of complementary colours. Set behind a blue background, the two hands - a recurring image in his work - gently hold the orange balls: connected by the thin yellow line. Movement between the balls is suspended in time: a snapshot into Miller’s playful and creative ability.
